This course is aimed at all staff working within the Health and Social Care sector who are involved in the day-to-day care of individuals with a tracheostomy in situ.
The course has a theoretical aspect followed by a practical session which includes suctioning.

Identify and understand anatomy and physiology of the neck.
Indications
Describe the indications for a tracheostomy
Complications
List the possible complications of having a tracheostomy.
Different types of tracheostomy
Identify the different types of tracheostomy tube and how to clean the inner tube.
Communication
Explain how to overcome challenges with communication.
Emergency Care
State the actions required in an emergency
Suctioning
Feel confident to carry out suctioning of a tracheostomy.
Humidification
Understand the need and practice of humidification.
Care of tracheostomy site
Correctly clean and dress a tracheostomy site.
Practical session
The delegates will observe a demonstration followed by individuals practicing on a manikin.
