Course Title: Cannulation (Theory Only)

This course is aimed at staff who will be required to administer intravenous medication and need the skills to cannulate.
This course is theory based with practice on a manikin arm.
Competency sign off would need to be arranged via employer
Learning Outcome & Assessment Criteria
Introduction – Anatomy and physiology
Identify relevant anatomy and physiology of veins and circulation
Cannula Insertion
Discuss legal and professional aspects
Understand correct insertion principles for cannulation
Understand the principles of safe practice in maintaining an IV site including:
Infection control
Patency
Discuss risks, hazards and complications associated with cannula insertion.
Practical Session
Demonstration and practical using a manikin arm.
At the end of the training session, there is a written assessment to evidence the learning of the attendees.
