This course is aimed at all staff working within Health and Social Care who are responsible for the day-to-day care of an individual with a nasogastric tube in situ.

The course includes NG tube insertion, ensuring correct placement and practice on manikin.

Nasogastric training ensures that staff have the correct theoretic knowledge and practical skills to provide optimum care and support for individuals with a nasogastric tube.

Introduction - What is a Nasogastric Tube

Identify and understand what a NG Tube is.

Indications and Contraindications

Understand the reasons for using NG tubes and when it is not suitable to use them.

Anatomy and Physiology

Describe the basic anatomy and physiology of the digestive system.

Procedure for NG insertion.

Administering feeds and medication

Explain and understand how to administer feeds and medication safely.

Complications

Describe the potential complications of using NG tubes. 

Mouth Care

Discuss appropriate and effective mouth care.

Problems

Effectively troubleshoot potential problems of NG tubes. 

Identify when to seek help.

NG Tube Insertion

Explain the procedure and obtain consent.

Ensure patient is aware of how to stop the procedure.

Ensure correct positioning prior to insertion

Ensure correct length of tube

Tube insertion (theory and practice on manikin)

Check Tube Position

Identify that the tube is correctly positioned.

Securing and Monitoring the Tube

Secure the tube

Explain when and how to monitor the tube.

At the end of the training session, there is a written assessment to evidence the learning of the attendees.
