Course Title:  Visual Impairment Awareness

Course length 3 hours

This course is aimed at all staff supporting individuals who are visually impaired.

The course begins with basic anatomy of the eye and conditions that can affect the eyes and ends with the opportunity to try the simulation glasses – to see what it could be like to have some of the more common eye conditions.

Learning Outcome & Assessment Criteria

Introduction

Define visual impairment

Discuss how the eye works and what can go wrong.

Identify common eye conditions and their effects.

The emotional impact of sight loss.

Support for the visually impaired

Recognising people with sight loss, including equipment that may be available/used

How to assist a visually impaired or blind person

Discuss effective communication

Reasonable adjustments

Eye Health

The importance of eye health

When to seek further advice.

Simulation

Delegates have the opportunity to try simulation spectacles.

At the end of the training session, there is a written assessment to evidence the learning of the attendees.
