Who We Are
At Home Instead team at Lichfield, Tamworth & North Warwickshire, we are committed to providing exceptional home care, for those who wish to stay independent at home. We also have a commitment to providing services in the wider community, with four weekly Memory Café’s ; these sessions are hugely popular with those living with dementia, and their carers /loved ones. They provide a safe space, whilst providing social interaction, emotional support, and cognitive stimulation.
Why are we hosting the dementia bus?
As part of our commitment to raise dementia awareness in the community, we are hosting the "dementia bus," also known as the "Virtual Dementia Tour" (VDT). This is an immersive training experience designed to simulate the effects of dementia. It was created to help those that care, healthcare professionals, and family members understand what it's like to live with dementia.
The experience aims to promote empathy and improve the quality of care provided to individuals with dementia. The primary goal of the dementia bus is to educate people about the realities of living with dementia, fostering greater empathy and improving care practices. It can be particularly impactful for caregivers, medical professionals, and family members.
Here are some key aspects of the dementia bus :
- Simulating Environment: Delegates enter this specially designed space that has been altered to simulate the sensory and cognitive impairments associated with dementia. This can include changes to lighting, sounds, and physical obstacles.
- Sensory Alterations: Participants may wear special glasses, headphones, gloves, and other equipment that distort their senses. These devices can simulate visual impairment, auditory hallucinations, and reduced tactile sensation.
- Tasks and Activities: During the tour, participants are asked to complete everyday tasks such as sorting items, dressing, or finding objects. These tasks are made deliberately challenging to mimic the confusion and frustration that people with dementia often experience.
Debriefing Session:
After the simulation, there is a debriefing session, where participants can discuss their experiences, reflect on their emotions, and learn more about dementia. This helps to reinforce the lessons learned and promote a deeper understanding of the condition
