Course Title: Supra Pubic Catheter Care
Course length 2 Hours
Maximum number to attend, 20 – 60, up to 20 delegates per course
This course is aimed at staff who support individuals who have a supra pubic catheter in situ. Staff will be able to understand the reasons for catheterisation and the associated risks along with their own responsibilities.
The course will enable staff to correctly empty and change catheter bags with a strong focus on the importance of infection control

Introduction - Anatomy and Physiology
Understand how the bladder works and what can go wrong.
Supra Pubic Catheter
Understand the reasons for supra pubic catheterisation
How to manage a supra pubic catheter
Complications of a supra pubic catheter
Emptying a Catheter Bag
Understand infection management implications
Have an awareness of how to measure urine output and monitor for abnormalities.
Urinalysis
Understand why urinalysis is needed.
Explain the different urine specimens
The importance of infection control
Obtain a urine sample correctly
Catheter Removal
Understand the procedure for safe catheter removal
Discuss associated problems and techniques should problems arise.
Drainage Systems
Explain the different drainage systems and the importance of good infection control.
At the end of the training session, there is a written assessment to evidence the learning of the attendees.
