Course Description:

A large number of people in care or requiring care have difficulty eating as a result of Dysphagia, which is an issue with swallowing. Unfortunately, it is a common consequence of many conditions including dementia, stroke, cerebral palsy, and multiple sclerosis.

This training will provide knowledge on the process of swallowing, reducing the risks of choking, and how to spot the early signs of problems swallowing. Difficulties swallowing can have potentially life-threatening consequences such as choking, dehydration, malnutrition, weight loss, and more.

Understanding dysphagia and managing it can help reduce the risks it poses and also improve the quality of life for those who are dealing with dysphagia.

Introduction – Physiology of Swallowing:

Understand the process of swallowing identifying the stages involved.

What is Dysphagia:

Understanding the terminology

Identify the different types of Dysphagia

Warning signs or triggers

Understand the difference between coughing and choking/treatment for these

Identify signs and symptoms of aspiration

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD):

Discuss GERD including signs and symptoms and treatments available

Managing Dysphagia

Discuss:

Preventative measures

Mealtimes

Modification of diet and fluids

Oral care

Administration of medication

ADLs

Positioning

Liaising with MDTs

Risk Assessment / Care Planning

Practical Session:

Practical feeding experience with thickening agent
