This course is aimed at all Managers who oversee or have responsibility for staff who administer medication within their workplace.
This course is will not provide certification for administering medication.
Learning Outcome & Assessment Criteria
Introduction
Understand responsibilities under CQC in relation to the administration of medicines
Understand commonly used medical terms
Safe Administration of Medication
State the key points involved in the safe administration of medicines.
Controlled Drugs
What they are/documentation/requirements for administration
Errors with Medication
Understand the most common causes of medication errors.
Discuss action to take if:
Incorrect medication administered to patient
Incorrect dose administered to patient
Medication administered at incorrect time
Understand your role in the reporting procedure
Describe your role in the reporting of adverse drug reactions to the national data base.
Ordering, delivery and storage of medication
(In line with local company policy)
Discuss ordering process.
Discuss process of documenting delivery of medication.
Actions taken if medication cannot be accepted
Discuss appropriate storage for medicines.
Medication Disposal (out of date and/or part used medication)
Discuss the process for disposal of medication in line with current laws and legislation and local company policy.
Audits
Understand the need for audits and information required.
Case Study
All participants to discuss case study and reflect on own practice.
