Course Title:  Medication for Nurses

This course is aimed at Registered Nurses who are responsible for administering medication.

The course begins with an overview of relevant legislation and guidance and provides awareness around administering medication as well as storage of medication.

Learning Outcome & Assessment Criteria

Introduction

Understand your legal and professional obligations in the administration of medicines; this will incorporate the standards set by the NMC.

Understand commonly used medical terms

Consent

Describe the processes involved in obtaining a valid consent to treatment

Safe Administration of Medication

State the key points involved in the safe administration of medicines.

Understand the dangers of secondary dispensing.

Errors with Medication

Understand the most common causes of medication errors.

Discuss action to take if:

Incorrect medication administered to patient

Incorrect dose administered to patient

Medication administered at incorrect time

Understand your role in the reporting procedure

Describe your role in the reporting of adverse drug reactions to the national data base.

Commonly used Medications

(this will be specific to each service provider – common medications will be identified at the start of the training session)

List commonly used medications and their effects.

Identify common side effects and interactions

Controlled Drugs

What they are/documentation/requirements for administration 

Drug Calculations

Look at drug calculations.  

Complete a workbook during the training session.

Audits

Understand the need for audits and information required.
