The dementia interpreter course is designed to enable delegates to understand how to communicate with people with dementia and recognise that behaviours are often a way of telling us something.
Part of this course is experiential training which means we are going to put you into the same position as the people we are trying to communicate with. This will give you the experience of the different communication barriers people with dementia may endure on a daily basis.
D.I.E.T. (Dining Immersive Experiential Training) will transport you into understanding and overcoming the challenges faced by people around mealtimes.
You will learn about and experience some of the factors that influence food and fluid intake in care settings.
You will be introduced to more inclusive ways of supporting individuals at mealtimes.
Ultimately, this is about understanding how a person might feel and make the changes needed to reduce anxiety around mealtimes and improve lives.
Dementia Dictionary
Have you seen the Dementia Dictionary? Understanding that people with dementia face challenges with communication, especially verbally, we also recognise that they start to communicate in a different way. This is typically through emotions, body language, behaviours, noises, and actions. These changes form something special. It becomes the 'Language of Dementia'. We have seen this happen in care homes and home settings across the country, even the world. The universal Language of Dementia needs to be translated in order to better care for people with dementia. In the world's first dementia dictionary, this is what our global network of dementia interpreters are doing. Search through the dictionary to see if an action or behaviour your loved one is displaying has been translated.
